Heifer International South Africa currently works in three provinces, with high levels of unemployment and malnutrition, KwaZulu Natal and Limpopo.
We have assisted over 3000 households in communities where there was little hope, namely Eastern Cape, and a degraded environment.
Heifer works with communities to change the lives of hungry children.

HPSA (formely Heifer International South Africa) is a community development organisation that partners with impoverished rural communities to end hunger and poverty in South Africa and care for the earth. HPSA links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Our animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market. When many families gain this new sustainable income, it brings new opportunities for building schools, creating agricultural cooperatives, forming community savings and funding small businesses. HPSA provides rural women and men with training support, seeds, trees and livestock to start their own small farming business. Each family commits to pass on (donate) the equivalent all what he or she received to another needy family. Each training module is made to be printed in A3 paper size and be mounted on a cardboard triangle like a calender so that it can be used in the field the pictures facing the audience and the questions facing the facilitator. The pictures are to trigger identity and reaction from the farmers and then questions to widen the discussion. Each section has a reference to where to find the answers to these questions after the farmers have answered them. If we want to achieve our mission of ending hunger and poverty, we have to continue to discover and develop innovative solutions to take communities beyond addressing just the needs of handfuls of families. We are now focused on empowering groups of thousands at a time to collaborate in order to take advantage of economies of scale and participate in markets as an organised group. Building this social capital working with farmers existing agricultural assets to increase productivity will create positive sustainable change. We are committed to running an efficient, high-performance organization. We believe investments are necessary for meaningful long-term growth. The most important measure of a charity is impact, and ours can be seen in the lives of more than 8050 individuals we’ve helped lift out of hunger and poverty. In 2013/14, 1000 new small holder farming families will become part of the cycle of positive change, And they in turn will pass on possibilities and shared successes to others in their communities. None of this work would be possible without the dedication of the thousands of small holder farmers with whom we work and our loyal supporters and partners. We measure our success by the children we help feed, the lives we help change and the futures we give hope. Part of HPSA's larger strategy to eliminating poverty is making short-term investments in order to diversify and increase fundraising. These financial activities yield a great impact in the long run. HPSA has seen results in Zusiphe Poultry Project in Nkandla by implementing cost-effective measures to train, plan and evaluate our programs there. Our ongoing efforts in Blouberg in Limpopo, increase families' income and crop yields by building off existing assets and investing in their resources. The most important measure of a charity is impact, and ours can be seen in the lives of more than 8030 individuals we've helped lift out of hunger and poverty.
